More of the chaparral in Big Tujunga wash near Hansen Dam. Nice warm spring weather and great outflow of water. Birds very common as well as butterflies. Swallows seen darting about the river trying to get bugs in flight.

wildflowers Deukmajian Park 4172011
Some wildflower examples: monkey flower, purple bells, mustard, canyon lilies, yarrow, thistle, indian paintbrush, wild morning glory...these up above 2000 feet to 3500 feet.
Whiting Woods 4102011
A nice hike up the "east" flank...essentially a fire break to prevent wild fires. This goes up 700 feet in 3 short blocks. It's a pretty good workout. Nice 5 mile loop from Crescenta Valley. Today nice and cool spring weather in general.
Sturtevant Falls 3162011
A nice springy hike up to Sturtevant Camp from Chantry Flats. The falls gushing a lot of water this year. Very Sylvan with a "lord of the rings" feel to it. Plants green and perking flowers...especially some ceanothus this time of year. One goes over the falls and will enter Spruce Grove and Sturvevants. A trail to Mt Wilson branches off here as well as over to Mt Vetter. Also there's access to San Gabriel Canyon campsites.

Snow Verdugo Mountains 2/20/2011
Hiked up here and found first snow at 2700 feet above the sea. This after a much colder rain storm nite of 2/19. Los Angeles pretty clear and most of the basin seen well. Deep snow on the mountains peaks of the San Gabriels. First snow up here since 1988 or 1991.
