Verdugo Mountains
These mountains are in the "backyard" of Los Angeles. There are probably 40 miles of fire road and/or trails in which to go from one end of the range to the other. These are beautiful in their own way...with a type of sylvan chaparral that adorns the slopes. Many side canyons are spiced with sycamore, pacific live oak, willow, elderberry, poison oak, and bay trees. They have a nice bloom after rainy years. Many wildlife up here despite the dry appearance (browning in the summers). Sadly, the Brand Park and Wildwood Canyon sides have burned in 2002 and 2005. The planted pine forest on the northwest suffered greatly and hopefully replanting will be in order. One can walk literally from Sun Valley on one end to north Glendale on the other in roughly 8-10 miles. Highest peak just above 3000 feet and a few bumps close to that.
